Born in 1978 in Transilvania (Romania), Cristian Sandu started his musical activities at the age of six, studying violin in his hometown, Reghin. After his studies at the Arts College from Târgu Mureş, he graduated ”Gheorghe Dima” Music Academy in Cluj (Klausenburg). Specialized in Musicology, Choral Conducting and Orchestral Conducting, he was the pupil of Victor Dumănescu and Petre Sbârcea, notorius professors and conductors. As a student, he started his conducting activity promoting the compositions of his colleagues composers in front of his first orchestra, I Giovani Musicisti. This period marks also his debut at the Romanian National Opera in Cluj, with Il Barbiere di Siviglia (2004). Ever since, he is a permanent guest conductor both in opera and ballet repertory.
Cristian Sandu graduated in 2007 also the “Ilya Musin” International Academy of Advanced Conducting held in Sankt-Petersburg, class of Leonid Korchmar. In Russia, he enriched his experience attending other great masters as Valery Gergiev, Tugan Sokhiev or Yuri Temirkanov. In Italy, since 2008 he studied with Maurizio Arena in Orvieto and especially with Nello Santi, while assisting him in theaters as San Carlo di Napoli, La Fenice di Venezia, Teatro alla Scala di Milano or Zurich Opera.
In 2010 he won the First Prize at the International Contest of Orchestral Conducting “Jeunesses Musicales” in Bucharest, and in 2011/12 season he held the position of artistic director of Iasi National Opera. At the same time, he was a permanent guest of the Romanian opera theatres and philharmonics such as Cluj Romanian National Opera, Cluj Hungarian Opera, Bucharest National Opera, Iasi National Opera, Timisoara National Opera, Craiova Opera, Bucharest ”George Enescu” Philharmonic Orchestra, Bucharest Radio Chamber Orchestra, Cluj Transilvania Philharmonic Orchestra, Sibiu Philharmonic Orchestra, Iasi Philharmonic Orchestra, Oradea Philharmonic Orchestra a.o.
Since 2014, Cristian Sandu was appointed guest conductor of Bucharest National Opera, where among many productions, he conducted the premiere of Rigoletto in the company of british director Stephen Barlow. In 2015 he collaborated with great names from the international ballet world, such as Alina Cojocaru and Johan Kobborg. In the same year, he signed the musical leadership of the DSCH/The Dream ballet production, on Shostakovics and Mendelssohn music. In june 2018 he conducted in Târgu Mureş the national premiere of La Sonnambula with Kishinev State Philharmonic Orchestra.
Abroad, he started his activity in 2006 in Daegu International Opera Festival (South Korea) with the opera Il Matrimonio Segreto and in the years to come he conducted Kiev Radio Symphony Orchestra, Sankt Petersburg “Klassika” State Symphony Orchestra, Forli “Bruno Maderna” Symphony Orchestra, Dnepropetrovsk Philharmonic Orchestra, Lecco “Sinfolario” Orchestra, Daegu Opera Festival Orchestra (DOFO) and Palermo Chamber Orchestra. In april 2013 he conducted in Almaty (Kazakhstan) the performance of Aida, La Traviata and Verdi Gala in ”Verdi 200” International Opera Festival at Abai Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre. In 2017 he made his japan debut in front of Tokyo New City Orchestra.
With a Ph.D in Stylistics Aspects of Vocal Interpretation in Italian Opera, Cristian Sandu is Associate Professor at ”Gheorghe Dima” Music Academy in Cluj, conductor and vocal coach within the Opera Studio and from 2018 he is the principal guest conductor of Galati National Opera and Operetta Theater.
